Podium steps are the heavy-duty alternative to a step ladder or scaffold tower for working at height for long periods of time and with equipment. Although scaffold towers are useful, they require assembly and dis-assembly in between jobs, which can be a nuisance if you need to work for extended periods in different parts of the same site as taking down and erecting the tower will eat into the work time. Step-ladders are great for when you need to move about the site between jobs, but they are uncomfortable when used for a long period of time and a scaffold tower is much safer and better to use when equipment is involved. Podium steps are the perfect in between solution, providing both stability and portability. There's a wide range of podium steps available so let’s take a look at some o..

We’ve looked at ladders in love songs on this blog in the past and touched on the subject of Romeo and Juliet and what might have been had they had a ladder! But real life imitates art sometimes, which brings us this story from Derbyshire in the UK. On a Monday evening in mid-July, a couple in their twenties were getting amorous, but could not get into the boyfriend’s house without waking up his mother and having to face the consequences: something they did not want to do. The couple spied a ladder attached to the roof of a vehicle parked in the street and so, with a plan to use it to climb in through the boyfriend’s window, one of the couple started trying to loosen the ladder from the van. Alas, the couple were seen and the police were called – they were taken to court, "lucki..

Ladders may not be the most fashionable item you could think of, but it's been used as a prop during fashion shoots for years.  Actress Kate Hudson is the latest model to do so, as she shows off a new collection by designer Ann Taylor.  Hudson is climbing a ladder of the type you might find in a library, but she is not following proper ladder safety while doing so! (you should not turn sideways on a ladder, especially whilst holding something in one hand, and not holding the ladder with the other.) Of course, this is a fashion shoot so the normal rules of ladder safety don't really apply, as Hudson isn't actually using the ladder for any task - in this case it is just a prop. New York based fashion photographer Jamie Nelson used a step ladder with a paint shelf in a fashion shoot, having t..

The ladder as a muse? Ladders are useful pieces of equipment and hardly the sort of item you could imagine a creative type getting inspired by, but it seems like the ladder and the associations of climbing, descending and bridging a gap are things which inspire some moving music. The rap artist Kalenna uses these connotations in her song ‘Ladder’, in the chorus: “Just remember why I helped you climb What’s yours was supposed to be mine We supposed to share everything Oh that’s why I gave you everything I’ve been your ladder for so long I never minded my heart being stepped on As long as you made it to the happy place I was your ladder to the happy place” She presents her role in the relationship as that of a ladder, providing a supportive structure for her and..

There have been a couple of instances in the news lately of ladders being deployed in rescue situations, but not by firefighters into a burning building; these rescues have been from underground. We briefly mentioned earlier this month about a woman in Toledo, Ohio, who was driving along the road, minding her own business, when a sinkhole opened up in front of her car. The road surface literally disappeared from view and although the woman tried to drive round the increasing hole, she ended up at the bottom of it. Sinkholes are caused by unstable ground beneath the upper surface and often occur after floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters where there is a lot of disturbance to the ground. Emergency services believe this one was caused by a water mains leak underneath the road, whi..

In the world of extension ladders, there is not much that can beat the rope operated 5.5 metre Titan Trojan triple extension ladder from Titan Ladders. It is designed for heavy industrial use and is perfect for working environments such as factories, building sites, warehouses and aircraft hangars. Weighing in at 65 kilos, this is not a light piece of equipment, but the wall wheels help with extending the ladder. Titan Ladders have a specially designed Supagrip articulated foot for their ladders and these safety feet make sure the ladder stays where it is meant to. The full height of this triple extension ladder is 14.7 metres, just under 50 feet, while it measures 5.5 metres when closed. It's not called the Trojan for nothing! Titan Ladders have created a ladder that is not intended for s..

Using ladders on roofs is not something to be undertaken lightly, as roof repairs caused by negligent use of a roof ladder can be costly and the effect of a bad accident does not bear thinking about. Using a ladder on a hot tin roof is even more dangerous, as the metal surface gets a lot hotter than conventional roof tiles and tin roofs tend to be less sturdy than other materials. However, there is one ladder on a hot roof that has been in place for more than 150 years. At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Israel, a wooden ladder was placed on a ledge on the second floor and has not been touched since (apart from an incident in 1997 when a tourist secretly took the ladder and hid it behind the altar – it was found and replaced after a few weeks). The church is shared by six..

Regular readers will know that we often visit the topic of fish ladders, as it is an unusual subject, especially when we consider the parallels between how fish and people use ladders.  Both are used to reach higher levels that cannot be accessed without help, both are used seasonally (with the exception of those who use ladders for their job, many domestic ladder users only actually use their ladder for Christmas decorations or spring cleaning/decorating) and in both cases, some ladders are designed with a specific user or obstacle in mind. The Pacific Lamprey is one of those breeds of fish that does need a specific ladder. Scientists at the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River, working with the US Army Corps of Engineers, have been modifying the existing fish ladders (designed originally..

What better way to entertain the kids (and the adults too) on a sunny day in the garden than with a ladder toss?  The ladder toss is a relatively new game, although it does feel rather like a Victorian lawn game such as quoits or croquet.  The premise is fairly simple: a ladder of three rungs is staked into the lawn (or freestanding versions can be made/bought) and two or more teams attempt to throw bolas (two balls attached by string) onto the ladder rungs.  The top rung is usually worth the least points and the bottom rung the most, but there is no set way of scoring, as the game of ladder toss is a grassroots phenomenon and there are many different sets of rules and scoring.  In some versions, having a bola on each rung gives a bonus ten points and with only three bolas per team, this i..

When we think of fire crews rescuing people with ladders, we usually imagine them using them to get somewhere higher. However ladders can also be handy to rescue someone from below too! A Toledo woman escaped serious injury yesterday when a large sink-hole opened up in the road in front of her car whilst she was driving. Ms Knox was unable to stop the vehicle in time and ended up at the bottom of the hole, estimated to be over 10 foot deep. Luckily firemen, complete with the aforementioned ladders, were soon on the scene and after a few minutes and Ms Knox was able to climb out largely unaided. It is thought that the sinkhole opened up due to the heavy rains the area has been having...
