Admittedly sometimes more artistic than practical, there are pieces of furniture out thereA white ladder in a bathroom with a towel hanging on it. that are made from ladders, whether repurposed or taken apart and put together to make something new. From shelving units to sofas, ladders have been used to create all sorts of living room and general home pieces. Recycling is an important aspect of our society, however, so perhaps reusing old wooden ladders is not as whacky as it first sounds. Here are some interesting, and some bizarre, pieces of furniture that have been made using ladders. You never know, you might even have some ideas for your own old ladders.
  1. Shelving
Ladders can be used for several types of shelving. Some have been attached to the walls horizontally and the gaps between the rungs used as shelving for books and other miscellaneous items. It has a rustic appeal to it and could work nicely in several homes. The ladders are sturdy and can hold anything from books to small potted plants. They have also been used as shoe shelving, with high heels hanging off of the rungs, allowing them to be displayed freely and giving easy access to the shoes. Or, the ladder can remain closed and the shoes can be placed on top of the rungs for easy display if they don’t have heels. They also seem to be quite popular as towel racks, with the ladders leaning in the corner of the bathroom with the towels neatly folded and draped over the rungs. If you are looking for rustic appeal in your home, then these are definitely the way to go.
  1. Beds
Yes, there have been bed frames made from ladders. Several ladders and laid side by side to create the base of the frame, and then one or two more are used the head and foot boards. They are noted to be surprisingly comfortable and sturdy, despite being made from old wooden ladders. As with all ladder furniture, it really does give the room a very rustic and natural feel. It is perhaps worth a try if you are in need of a new bedframe and have a few old ladders to spare.
  1. Garden Displays
Covered in greenery and potted plants, old step ladders can look sweet and picturesque in your garden. Simply cover them with a lot of shrubbery for an overgrown but tidy appearance and put large and small potted plants on each of the rungs. Some people even put birdhouses on them for extra decorative appeal and to encourage wildlife into the garden. It will give the impression of a little fairy garden!
  1. A ladder decorated with Christmas lights and tinselHanging Lights
Some people have attached old wooden ladders to their ceilings above the dining room table or even in their kitchen so that they could hang lights from them. It has a cosy look and feel to it, adding to the rustic design and leaving a seemingly French impression. In the kitchen, some people have even hung their pots and pans from them to really add to the atmosphere – brass and copper ones look especially good. There are even some who have used ladders as Christmas trees, decorating them with lights and plant life for the festive season. Presents were placed underneath along with the hanging of traditional decorations on the rungs. Whilst we obviously love ladders, even we think this may have been taking it a little too far however – it doesn’t exactly give a festive feeling, however it is a great way to save purchasing a Christmas tree every year!
