We've looked at some perilous mountain trails and hiking routes, as well as the possibility of ladders on Mount Everest, but this access route in China, to the peak of Mount Hua Shan has got to be the most terrifying. The trail starts as a set of stone stairs carved into the mountainside and these go up and up the side so far that you can't see the end when you're standing at the base. They go on for so long that they are known as the Heavenly Stairs. As you climb up the stairs, houses and small villages sit on either side of the stairs, as people have settled here for the isolation or the breathtaking scenery. Once you are at the top of the stairs, a cable car carries you across to the southern peak of Mount Hua Shan, for the final leg of the journey. If the long slog up the stone steps and the heights achieved hasn't put you off, you're facing a trail that is three planks wide, nailed and fixed any way possible into the side of the mountain, with a chain handrail fixed into the stone face for people to hold on to. There is nothing to stop you falling except the tenacity of your own grip. Parts of this trail are actually made up of toe holds hewn into the rock face with chains to hold on to as you climb vertically up the mountain. This is definitely not one for the faint hearted! What would possess people to make this treacherous climb, you ask? Well, how far would you go for a cup of tea? The destination of this trail is a Taoist temple that has been converted into a teahouse. Possibly the highest tearoom in the world, this is where the trail leads to. You would need a cuppa (or something stronger) after completing this perilous climb, but spare a thought for the person who has to deliver cups and saucers to this teahouse without breaking or dropping them!
