We've all had a library book or two out past the return date, but the fines for overdue library books are quite small and rarely mount up to much even over a couple of weeks. In fact, most libraries now have a maximum fine to impose on very long overdue books, avoiding the possibility of someone having to pay hundreds of pounds for a forgotten loan. Did you know that overdue rental tools also carry the same sort of penalty? One 21-year-old man from Florida has found this out the hard way. He rented a forty-foot extension ladder from an equipment hire firm, telling them he needed it only for the day. Joshua Gladin, the ladder renter, called the company later that day, stating that he would now need the ladder for the rest of the week and would return it after that time. However, Gladin held on to the ladder for several weeks, ignoring several phone calls and a registered letter, which was returned unopened. The company, Adaptive Ready Rent, called the police when it became apparent they were not getting their ladder back. Police also tried to contact Gladin but had no luck, only getting through to voicemail, which was never returned. Gladin was eventually arrested and is due to appear in court in early December. The rental fees on the ladder, at the time of Gladin's arrest, were $498.75, which is nearly as much as the same ladder cost to buy new. If Gladin does not return the ladder or it has been damaged, he will be $829 worse off. The moral of this story is always to return items you have borrowed, as there may be a hidden hefty fine involved if you don't!
