Ladders in Dreams
30 Jun

There are many common dreams we might have as we lay down to sleep at night – falling
from a great height, realising you’ve left your clothes at home, your teeth falling out. And there’s much information on what complex emotions these dreams could represent for us. But what does it mean if you dream about ladders?
Dreaming of a ladder can represent that there is a goal you want to attain. It’s somewhere out of reach, perhaps because it is hard to meet or causes you stress and anxiety. Either way, it’s something you need to work for. Interestingly enough, it’s not just having a ladder in your dream that is symbolic – it’s what you’re DOING with the ladder that can help you understand what the dream represents about your emotions and state of mind.
If you are climbing the ladder in your dream you’re on the right track. If, however, you are going downwards this is often said to symbolise trouble on your path. And if you fall off? Well, some people interpret that this means you will encounter difficult people. Other times it has been suggested that this means you are experiencing loss. Ladders can often represent social position. Perhaps you feel as if you are slipping in life.
In general, dreaming of a ladder is considered a sign of good luck. Kind of like a mental four leaf clover. They are good omens in the Eastern tradition, as they symbolise rising and support. You can also take a closer look at the ladder to analyse your feelings further. Long ladders can mean being unhappy and tired – is there something you have been struggling to do for a long time that is getting you down? If the ladder is made of wood you might be making mistakes or you feel distressed, but metal shows you feel as though you don’t need to depend on others. And don’t forget to try and remember where the ladder was placed. If it’s laying down on the floor it’s considered to mean authority. If, however, it is raised upwards it can represent recovering from an illness.
Climbing a ladder could also represent your spiritual growth and elevation. If the ladder in the dream is a gold colour some people say this means you need to make your life more fulfilling as you are feeling unsatisfied. If a ladder falls on you at any point it could show you are concerned about false friends.
If you aren’t convinced by these interpretations of what dreaming about a ladder could mean, you could always think about what Freud said about the subject. He described the ladder as a symbol of sex, with each rung of the ladder representing the actual physical movements.....we have to admit - we certainly haven't seen our ladders in this light!
So the next time you find yourself dreaming about ladders, consider whether any of these explanations could point towards why! Do you think ladders in our dreams can tell us more about how we are feeling? Or does it mean nothing at all?
