Having a swimming pool is a real luxury in the UK – we might not get a long summer but we like to make the most of what we get and that means barbecues and pool parties at every chance.  Although a permanent built in swimming pool is beyond the reach of many families, an above ground pool can offer a budget friendly alternative; which can be packed away over the winter when it is not needed or left set up for the adventurous winter swimmer.

Having an above ground swimming pool means having a ladder to get in and out and there are many designs on the market.  A major concern with swimming pool ladders is their safety with children around, as an unattended child can easily climb into the pool and drown without anyone noticing.  Locking covers are available for swimming pool ladders, but as everyone knows a simple plastic cover is no match for a determined and curious toddler

Anyone with kids knows that stair-gates and cot bars can't contain the most adventurous child and the same applies to pool ladder covers.  To serve as a warning to others some parents filmed their two-year-old son; he is climbing up the supposedly un-scalable ladder cover reaching the top in less than a minute.  He was in no danger, as the parents were both present, but it did not take him long – just imagine if someone went into the house to answer the phone, a child could easily have climbed up this ladder cover and fallen in the water before they returned.  Removing the ladder is a much safer option if there are children around, as they will not be able to scale the sheer steep sides of an above ground swimming pool without help.

In Oklahoma City, another child got into trouble with a swimming pool ladder when the lifejacket he was wearing got stuck on the frame and he nearly drowned.  Although he was wearing a buoyancy aid, and therefore should have been safe, the very equipment that was intended to keep him afloat actually caused a near drowning, as he could not free himself from the ladder.  He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

If you're thinking about splashing out on an above ground swimming pool for the family this year make sure you take precautions to keep your children safe, and any visitors who may come over to join in the fun.  Never leave children unattended around water, even if you think they can swim.  A lockable gate is recommended around swimming pools to ensure young children cannot access it without an adult and the key, and a cover can help dissuade kids from climbing in if they can't get the cover off.  Whilst a swimming pool ladder is essential, always ensure it is not accessible when not in use, ideally by removing it or fencing it off.
