Whether
you’re installing the wiring in a new build, or replacing the wiring in an
older home you’ll be up a ladder for hours on end and you’ll need access to
various tools all the time.  Electricians
use fibreglass ladders because they don’t conduct electricity, making them safe
to use on any and all job involving wiring and installing new rings.  For most domestic electrical work the maximum
working reach you’ll need is 2.6 metres, which is the tallest standard ceiling
height, but for working on older properties with higher ceilings, or on stairs
you’ll need much more working height, and perhaps even a different type of
ladder.

For everyday
wiring installations, the Bratts Vision 360 3 tread fibreglass step ladder is
perfect.  The platform is 550mm x 400mm,
which gives you a big surface area on which to stand comfortably all day.  Optional extras include a tool tray for easy
access to pliers, crimps, wire and drills while rear wheels make moving it
around a room an absolute doddle – perfect if your back doesn’t like moving
heavy ladders round all day.  For working
on ceiling light installations the optional security strap is a must-have,
giving you a gentle reminder of where you are should you lean back too far.

The Bratts
Vision series is available with up to 11 treads (maximum working reach 4.69
metres) so there’s a model for every type of work, whether it’s at domestic,
retail or even industrial premises.  We
recommend adding the outriggers for the taller models, as the extra stability
will be welcome if you’re working on wiring in a busy factory or plant.

Both Lyte and
Youngman have cheaper options for fibreglass safety steps with wide platforms,
but they don’t have the options that the Bratts models do.  While a safety chain is included as standard
with these other manufacturers, you don’t have the option to add a tool tray or
wheels and for the busy electrician these options can make the difference.

We carry the
Youngman fibreglass Megasteps in 2, 4, 6 or 8 rung heights, and the Lyte models
from 2 to 8 treads inclusive.  The Lyte
Widesteps live up to their name, with a platform of 400 x 600 mm.  That 50mm can make all the difference in a
tight corner, so if you regularly work in places where access can be challenging
the wider platform may be helpful.  It’s
all in the name again, as these are lighter than the alternatives.  Rear wheels on the Lyte fibreglass Megasteps
ensure that moving around site is easy.

The taller
models from each manufacturer are ideal for use in gyms, commercial facilities
and even retail warehouses, as the freestanding platform gives you access to
the ceiling easily.  Fibreglass ladders,
with their bright yellow colour, are easily seen so you don’t need to worry
about shoppers missing you and bumping into the ladder base!  That said, when working around the public
it’s always a good idea to have somebody vigilant guarding the base of the
ladder.

We think the
Youngman models are a great budget-friendly option.  They may not have all the bells and whistles
of the others but they will do the job for a good price.  If weight is a consideration then the Lyte
Widesteps offer the lightest weight for the largest platform, and the wheels
come as standard for ease of movement.
The Bratts Vision 360 range is a little pricier, but with a range of
options it meets the needs the competition can’t.  All these ladders are available with free
next day delivery, so if you’ve just met your new workmate in the form of one
of these fibreglass safety steps you can get acquainted within 24 hours
