Whether you reserve time at the start of the year for a Spring clean, or simply carry out a deep clean of one or more rooms at intervals throughout the year, you will need a ladder for many of the tasks that come with a full on tidy up, not least because it is during this chore that painting and decorating tasks are often integrated.  Cleaning the top of cupboards and bookshelves, as well as behind tall furniture, are both common deep clean jobs and in fact many of these chores are high up jobs – hoovering and cleaning skirting boards is much easier, as it can be done without any additional equipment and therefore these jobs are done much more regularly throughout the year.  It is the things you can't see that get left for a yearly deep clean.

This is where a ladder comes in handy.  You may be thinking of doing a big cleanse, but a ladder can tell you whether it is needed and also which areas are the priority.  The extra height that even a step ladder affords, gives a homeowner a new advantage point from which to assess the scale of the cleaning needed.  You will be able to see things from a new angle and uncover dust traps you never even knew were there as the light falls on them differently, cobwebs being a prime example of dirt that hides in plain sight.  Being able to see the scale of the cleaning jobs enables you to plan for an efficient clean, tackling the higher up jobs first before moving down, ensuring that you do not have to clean the floors several times due to dust dropping off tall items.

In each room, a step ladder should be used to check on each high up item, such as light fittings, ceiling fans, picture rails and the tops of furniture.  A three tread step stool is a great option for homeowners, as it gives that much needed height with wide comfortable treads and a handrail for extra security.  The deep treads make standing on the ladder for long periods of time much easier than with a more traditional step ladder, and the handrail at the top gives something to hold on to while looking around, checking out what state the room is in.  It is lightweight (only 9.3 kilos), so is easy to move around a room and within the house, which means the planning process can be safe and quick.

The step stool is also ideal for many cleaning tasks, giving 26 inches of extra height; that is enough for the average person to reach a light shade, curtain rails and high shelves.  If more height is needed then trade steps from Youngman are a great buy.  They are inexpensive yet sturdy and they are designed to withstand the regularity of use that a tradesperson would inflict on the ladder, meaning that they will last for many years when uses for home cleaning jobs.  They come in a range of sizes, and all have a wide platform at the top, which is the place that you will ideally spend most of the time.  The model you will need depends on your height and the height at which you need to work; short people with tall ceilings will need a taller model than tall people in an average home.  For extra height over and above that provided by the three-tread step stool, the five, six, seven and eight tread models are available, although the eight-tread model does have a platform height of over five feet, making it suitable only for homes with high ceilings or double height areas where there are light fittings to clean and change.

If you don't already have a ladder for cleaning around the home, take a look at the models we recommended above, and if you do already have one, then we hope that the tips on pre-emptive ladder use will make your next deep clean run smoothly.
