Have you got some windows to clean? In addition to the squeegee, ladders are one of the main tools that make it possible to access windows that need to be cleaned. Here we take a look at the possible ladder choices available if you’re wanting to shine up your windows!
The top choice of window cleaning ladder is the ‘A’ ladder: a lightweight, A-shaped ladder featuring deeply serrated alloy rungs set in smooth rectangular box section sides for extra comfort and fitted with solid rubber anti-slip feet. This ladder is the go-to ladder of choice for most professional window cleaners for it’s ease of use, however it’s not the only option
The most basic of window cleaning ladders is that of the folding step ladder. It’s suitable for a variety of jobs and will be used for shop fronts in addition to residential windows. Most folding step ladders will be between 6 foot and 10 foot and will ideally offer strength, lightness and reach.
If you’re needing to clean windows above the 1st floor, then you could invest in an extension ladder. This would also mean you then have the perfect ladder for a variety of other jobs. They are generally manufactured in either aluminium or fibreglass, with some coming equipped with swivelling feet and a rope and pulley system.
Fibreglass ladders offer some protection against electricity as they cannot conduct electricity. They are also a little more rigid than aluminium, but at the same time usually cost a little more.
Available in a range of different lengths and sizes, extension ladders need to be selected with length in mind. Too long and it will be cumbersome, but you obviously need it long enough to be able to reach. The most common sizes are between 24 and 40 feet. To reach 2nd story windows you need at least 20 foot. Few windows cleaners need a ladder to be 40 foot long. It’s huge and usually too large, but keep in mind that you could always rent one if the need arose.
Two handy add-on features are leg levelers and stand offs. Built to enable ladder use on uneven terrain, leg levelers can be used to adjust the ladder legs to different lengths. Stand offs make it possible to have the ladder further away from the wall, and therefore giving more room to clean the windows.
One last major ladder that you need to know about is the sectional ladder. They are available as a group of ladders that can be separated for use under different conditions. They can lock together so that they become higher if you need the extra height. Being able to separate them makes it very easy to transport them and they usually have a tapered top section so that you can rest the top of the ladder on smaller sections such as on a glass divider.
