February saw the launch of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Hand holding smartphone with hand drawn media icons and symbols concept(NIOSH) ladder safety app. This is the first mobile application from NIOSH and has been designed and released to help improve safety when using step ladders. Step ladders are a huge cause of accidents in the workplace and at home, but now thanks to the app more people will be able to use step ladders safely and securely. Some of the key features of the app include a number of interactive tools and detailed and easy to follow guides that are set to prevent major causes of falls and accidents. The app has a handy angle measuring tool that uses sound, vibration and visual signals to ensure users get the appropriate angle when setting up a step ladder before use. For users that are unsure of what ladder duty rating they require, the selection tool element of the app will be of great help. This will help users find the required ladder duty rating by determining the task at hand and user characteristics. Those users that are frightened of using step ladders may feel safer thanks to the Inspection Tool that is also available. This includes a checklist that users can easily follow to ensure their ladder is mechanically safe. Another useful elements of the app is the proper use tool. This contains a set of rules that should be followed to ensure safe step ladder use. By using smartphone technology, the team at NIOSH hope to make ladder safety guides and instructions more accessible in the hope of improving ladder safety across the globe. Currently the app is free to download on Apple iPhone and iPad and Google Android devices and is available in both English and Spanish.
